For years we have heard parents asking for work for their teenage kids during school breaks, for ways for them to earn income and skills and contribute to the family needs. As most parents are working, they are also looking for positive activities and influences for their kids besides being on their phones all summer (can anyone relate?)
It’s common at this point in teenagers’ education that students dropout of school due to family and social pressure to earn income or inability to afford schooling, which is not free.
This year local Thai Village managers developed a program in response to these needs. Teenage students will come into Thai Village for vocational training on different new skills projects. They will spend 2 weeks working on new skills with their manager mentors at Thai Village, along with interactive activities led by partner organizations in the afternoons.
Students earn money for the days that they work – but in addition to every hour they work, Thai Village will invest in their education by offering a scholarship for each hour, doubling their income. This way, students have autonomy over the income they earn while they are also helping their families provide for their education.
